For serious modelers and fansFeb 12, 2012
By Sam I have never seen Macross Frontier, but I love Robotech and the associated mecha. Seeing as already assembled VF-25's are in the 200 to 500 dollar range, I felt I was being clever by being economical, and purchased this model kit.
It's something I really would rather not do again.
Be advised, the instructions are in Japanese and not very clear on what positions some critical parts need to be in. This can cause heartache and stress deformation of some critical pieces. Also, don't lose any pieces - you don't get extra. The small piece the shoulder joint fits into the main torso is very small, and mine went flying into my sister-in-law's glass. I nearly went insane trying to find it. Every component is needlessly over-engineered - to assemble the leg, you need somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 different pieces, some of which do not fit correctly (I had to take a razor knife to the air intakes to get them to crown over the leg to hip joint). It's like Bandai wanted to make it complex for the sake of being complex, or at least to bamboozle me.
Also it claims it can transform into all three modes - I didn't want to risk it. Transforming this thing scares me, and pieces can fly off. You also need other pieces just to get it to transform correctly.
When it's all said and done, I can say I am intimately aware of the transformation sequence of the VF-25. It looks cool, but is fragile and stiff and I am deathly afraid of actually touching it, so on my shelf it will stay, with woefully under-applied decals upon it. It looks bad-ass, though. Pretty much the extent of what I actually got it for.
I would recommend it to serious modelers and Macross fans, but if you're a casual fan, or are not good at assembling delicate models, stay away! You will just get frustrated with this purchase.
