Costly but worth itJan 31, 2009
By AZ2062 The 1/72 scale VF-25F Messiah Valkyrie Alto Custom is a beautiful model. The precision of the pieces astounds me.The pieces fit closely together and the head, arms, and legs are all so well integrated into the design that in fighter mode it really does seem like a real fighter. Compare that to the older series valkyries where they're just stuck on the bottom.
The model provides a full sets of detailing stickers in both stickers and water decals. Which meant that I could use the stickers without painting the model and still have the decals if I ever do paint it. With just the stickers it looks very nice, easily as good looking as the high grade transforming toy from the original series. Looking at the promo shots the unpainted model with stickers is very close to what is shown. Aside from panel lines about the only noticeable thing is the cockpit and the gray ends of the head antenna. And I am impressed that the stickers don't get scrapped of during the transformation process. The detail ones seem to be a new thin type I've never encountered before.
Now I really like this model and I do think its worth the money for those who do think the detailing of models is worth the work and handling care they require. But there are some problems.
1. The clip the connects the nose cone to the cockpit section is weak. The nose cone pops off as often as it folds down.
2. The shoulder joints are overly complicated and stiff too. Its very hard to figure out how to position them during the transformation. And the stiffness of them makes you wonder if they're supposed to be moved that way. This is be more clear if the instruction text. But there is no translation of the text, so I don't know. The pictures alone are more than enough to build the model, but not as good for change directions. The shoulder problem is also makes it hard to align the forearms for clipping in on the plane mode. But that's not a big deal. With the double hand and shoulder stiffness the arms don't flop around.
3. Folding the fuselage and nose cone under the chest plate doesn't work as smoothly as the rest of the changes. This might be another issue addressed in the text. Or it might to an issue with the mech head assembly. I've noticed it doesn't always more along it tracks smoothly.
4. Some of the pieces don't hold on enough. The legs don't clip into position on the plane like the arms and everything else. And the gun and shield both fall off with a slight bump.
5. The battlroid head and a piece that's 2 lights on the fuselage are done in clear plastic rather than colored clear plastic. This bugs me because I've that colored clear plastic is used in almost every Gundam model I have. But my problem is that I'm convinced the model in the picture is built using a colored piece of plastic. I've never seen a paint that will leave the piece clear after painting.
